Hire My Mum 'is' the invention of necessity - The story of a real work from home mum.
For me, frustration this time was the mother of invention. After closing a retail business due to the pressures of trying to balance work and raising a young family, I scoured the local papers for a more practical source of income that could be done from home, while looking after 6yr old and 15mth old boys. I thought I couldn't be the only mum wanting to stay with her kids but still assist financially for the family.
I knew there had to be employers and business owners that would let me use my years of experience in marketing, database management and project management to complete jobs they couldn't afford a full time employee to do.
After a frustrating search, everything I found seemed to be just a scam or genuine potential employers where afraid to 'give' me work that I would do in my home office. Determined to do something about it, I founded 'Hire My Mum' to assist myself, and others like me, who wanted to stay at home with their kids but still contribute to the household income.
It's a fact that everyday, working women leave work to have babies. Women from all walks of life are affected, teachers, receptionists, sales people, secretaries, IT workers, solicitors etc - and the one thing they all have in common is they never forget the skills they have developed. In the process, dozens of businesses lose skilled workers. There's obviously a need to fill that gap.
The idea of a service that connects mothers, with a variety of business skills and experience between them, with business owners requiring contractors or employees to work on full time, part time and one off projects was not necessarily unique but not adequately supported. This opened a huge gap in the employment market place just waiting for an entrepreneur or a 'mumpreneur', with the right idea.
Two years on and Hire My Mum has moved to the forefront of Australia's online boutique job board market. In a time when most businesses are struggling to attract customers we continue to experience growth, hardly surprising when as a mum we are all just trying to provide for our families.
Our focus is and has always been on sourcing legitimate work from home jobs no matter where they appear. So some jobs are sourced directly with an employer while others may be listed on other major and boutique job boards. Moving forward our focus is to help business owners learn to outsourcing their businesses in 2010. By providing training, assessment guides and resource tools Australian business owners can deliver more genuine work from home opportunities to our members.
